Embedded Systems Engineer — Rust

We design automotive diagnostics and telematics hardware that runs in-vehicle, 24/7, for years at a time. We are looking for an engineer to own the Rust side of a C + Rust hybrid firmware running on ESP32-S3 and STM32H7/H5 platforms: messaging layer, telemetry resilience, FFI boundaries, and hardware-near components. This is a production engineering role, not academic R&D. Code correctness, readability, and predictability are non-negotiable.
Responsibilities
- Write production-grade Rust components on ESP-IDF v5.x, managing the no_std / std boundary
- Standardize memory ownership, null-check discipline, and unsafe block justification across C ↔ Rust FFI boundaries
- FreeRTOS task hygiene: stack sizing, core pinning, priority scheme
- Telemetry resilience: persistent queue, WiFi/LTE handover, idempotent retries, ordered delivery
- Build layers that process data from CAN FD / J1939 / OBD-II / DoIP buses
- Design cloud messaging integration (e.g. NATS JetStream, binary frames, mTLS) for large-scale fleet deployment
- Write unit / property / fuzz tests and integrate them into CI; enforce panic strategy and error-propagation rules
- Contribute technically to design and code reviews
Requirements
- Must-have
- 3+ years of production embedded experience (ARM Cortex-M and/or ESP32 class)
- Production-level Rust experience — correct use of unsafe, ownership/borrow model, no_std environments
- Strong C interop (FFI, extern "C", memory management)
- RTOS experience (FreeRTOS preferred), concurrency at task and interrupt level
- Hardware-near debugging: oscilloscope, logic analyzer, JTAG/SWD
- Ability to read and write English technical documentation

- Automotive buses: CAN FD, J1939, OBD-II, UDS, DoIP
- STM32H7/H5 family, TrustZone, secure flash / encryption
- LTE / AT command modem integration, lwIP, network resilience
- ESP-IDF internals, partition/NVS management
- Signal processing / high-speed ADC data acquisition
- Awareness of automotive safety/quality standards (ISO 26262, AUTOSAR fundamentals)
